A First Step on a New Journey by Bart Halloran, Moderator
On Sunday, January 27 at 4:00pm, Asylum Hill Congregational Church will install the Reverend Erica Thompson as senior minister. While the choice breaks another historic barrier, I believe that the true significance is that we, as an open and affirming congregation, are able to choose the most qualified person for this role. Imagine a world in which we can do just that, free from the shackles of racism, gender and sexual discrimination, and fear of difference. This is an important moment in which we can celebrate progress, share our hope for the future, and participate in a sacred covenant. Please join me and my family for this historic and celebratory occasion, your presence is important.*
This is but one step on our continuing faith journey. I am in the process of putting together a new Search Committee to be elected by the congregation to select a settled associate minister. The Nominating and Governance Committee, headed by Earl Exum, is putting together our committees for the next year. Jim Grigsby is leading an exciting new initiative focused on getting the word out to the community about AHCC and all we have to offer. I intend to join this group and work to spread the good news about our church, as I am truly proud that our congregation has put into practice our beliefs in openness and affirmation. The world needs our faith. If you are interested in being a part of this group, please contact me or Jim Grigsby. You are the Church.
Time flies. It is hard to believe that one of my principal roles is to assist in the transition for Linda Kelly to be AHCC’s next moderator. What a gift this role has been! I am always interested in hearing from members, please contact me if you have any questions or suggestions.
