Belsky Piano Competition

The 12th Simone Belsky Piano Competition was be held on November 8 in the sanctuary of Asylum Hill Congregational Church. This biennial competition is open to pianists over 30 years of age who are committed to pursuing a performance career.

After a wonderful afternoon musicale in our sanctuary featuring the virtuosic and sublime performances by four elite pianists, it was Miroslava Mintcheva who took home the Daniel J. and Alice Ford Ferraina prize of $2,000 in the 12th Simone Belsky Competition by a unanimous consensus of the judges. Mira, originally from Bulgaria and currently residing in Colorado where she is finishing her Docorate of Musical Arts in Piano Performance at the University of Colorado-Boulder, played three flawless Scalatti sonatas, the tour-de-force final movements of Beethoven's op. 110 piano sonata, and four of the passionate Etudes Tableaux by Rachmaninov.  The judges were impressed with the arc of her program, the variety in which she played different styles of piano music, the cleanliness of her tone and shear perfection in her Scarlatti, and her mature interpretation of the very difficult late Beethoven sonata. Mira has concertized in the US and has also played abroad, including recitals in Italy, the Czech Republic and Canada.  She was the second place winner in the 2009 American Protégé Competition and is a noted lecturer and teacher.

As part of the prize, Mira will be returning to AHCC on Friday, November 5, 2010 for a full-length recital on the Asylum Hill Concert Series.
