Profiles in Caring

Helping our Neighbors at West Middle School

If you would like to help West Middle School, there are numerous ways. An immediate need, sure to garner immediate results, is copier ink and toner. Because the school can’t afford workbooks, the teachers make over a million copies each year. They are constantly running out of toner and can’t make work sheets. Or, perhaps God is calling you to volunteer. You could volunteer a morning, an afternoon or even an hour a week as a mentor and aide in the classroom. Email AHCC member Betsy Woodard and ask about how rewarding it is and how to get involved. You can sign up to be a mentor/tutor next fall with ConnectiKids, and meet with a child at church on Wednesday afternoons. You can make a donation to the Hartford Education Foundation and ask that it be designated for grants for West Middle School by calling Pat Salner, Executive Director, at 803-2887. You can talk or email to AHCC member Myron Congdon, director of the Asylum Hill Children’s Zone, to learn more about how this organization helps West Middle School. If you’re interested in the long-term forecast for West Middle, contact AHCC member Courtney Bourns who is helping lead the charge to make West Middle a Full Service Community School. Write a letter, make a call. Let people know that we care about our neighbor.

Good Things ComeTo Those Who Walk

Walk Against Hunger
Sunday, May 4, 1:00 p.m. check-in

2:00 p.m. walk begins

Hunger is a greater reality than you may think. There are 100,000 people living in our region who don’t know for sure where their next will come from – working poor families and seniors who are forced to choose between essentials like rent, utilities and medicine … or buying groceries. A full 40% (40,000) of those people are children.
This year, 400 local hunger-fighting programs — food pantries, community kitchens, shelters, kid’s cafes and others — will rely on Foodshare. Foodshare’s Walk Against Hunger is the largest event of its kind in our area that benefits local families and children in need of food. Will you join the Asylum Hill Congregational Church walking team? Though this grave hunger situation is the context for our gathering, the event is a lot of fun and the real good news is that we will make a difference!
We meet at The Hartford building at 690 Asylum Avenue in Hartford and walk with hundreds of others for 3 miles, passing through Hartford’s west end. You can join our team (or make a donation on behalf of the team) by visiting www.foodshare.org. Click ‘WALK AGAINST HUNGER’. Click ‘SEARCH’ and join the ‘ASYLUM HILL CONGREGATIONAL CHURCH’ team. Each walker must also complete a pledge form (available in the church office). Ask your friends, family, and co-workers to support the 25th Annual Foodshare Walk Against Hunger.
In keeping with tradition, we will share a time of fellowship immediately following worship and prior to registration on May 4th. So, wear comfortable clothing to church and join us for pizza in the Youth Classroom. Please contact Fredd Ward at 525-5696 with questions.
